Frequently Asked Questions Hypnotherapy
What is Hypnotherapy and what is Hypnosis?
Hypnotherapy is the process of using hypnosis to engage with the subconscious mind. This interaction is the beginning of a process that can create positive changes in your life. There are various techniques and styles in the application of hypnotherapy. For the most part, all of these techniques and styles have some things in common. The first thing that they has in common is that there must be a strong desire to change on the part of the client. Secondly these methods usually include a deep state of relaxation also known as a trance state. Finally there are either language or visualizations (or both) that relate to emotions that we have stored in our bodies.
Hypnosis is a state, usually called a trance state, where you are deeply relaxed but can still hear and respond to questions or suggestions. A light trance stated is also known as daydreaming. In a light trance there the body will be relaxed and breathing and pulse slowed and your imagination can be directed. I think at some point or another we have all been driving somewhere and suddenly you realize that you've passed your exit or you are at work, and you knew you were driving, but don't really remember the drive. This is an example of a trance state that most people have experienced at some time in their lives. The difference when you are being hypnotized is that there is someone there leading you into this state of consciousness.
Can Hypnosis make me do something that I don't want to do?
No hypnosis cannot make you do something that you don't want to do. You always have free will. Being hypnotized does not take away your free will. You are still aware and you can still answer questions and you are still aware of your surroundings. Hypnosis will not make you forget where you are or create any kind of amnesia. Nor will you reveal anything that you don't want to reveal under hypnosis. You will not bark like a dog or cluck like a chicken either. These are all myths perpetuated by Hollywood.
Can Hypnosis make me fall asleep and not wake up?
No. Again this is another myth that Hollywood has kept up over the years for entertainment purposes.
What conditions can hypnotherapy help?
Weight loss, smoking cessation, stress, phobias, fears and it can help ease the pain related to major health problems. It can help with self esteem issues and motivation as well as creativity. It can help break bad habits, as well as helping to reduce anxiety and panic and ease most fears and anxiety related to surgeries. There are many other conditions that hypnotherapy can help with as well.
What can't be treated with hypnotherapy?
There are some conditions that require a mental health professional such as licensed psychiatric or psychotherapist. As well, medical issues related to the physical body should be treated by a qualified physician, who can, at their discretion, prescribe hypnotherapy for any of the conditions above. Drug addiction, clinical depression and other related problems need to be treated by a doctor and psychiatrist, and then they can prescribe hypnotherapy as a complimentary treatment.
